Samuel Barrett recorded from Jesus Oliver that the Miwok people ate eels.  They would catch eels with a net while fishing, no special sort of eel net.

“There is hardly any water in the Mokelumne river now.  The Indians are catching plenty of eel.  Your correspondent saw an Indian who had just come up from the river with about 200 eel on a rope around his neck. – Dido,”

“A brush fire is raging in Calaveras county below West Point.  The fire started near the Mokelumne river, and it is supposed was started by the Indians who are camping on the river catching eel.”
